Pros and Cons of Private Tuition
Advantages of Private Tuition
Private tuition, also called home tuition in some quarters, is the more favorable of the two when it comes to reaching out to the child. The tutor is able to address the needs of the child in a personal way. Because the private tutor fully concentrates on the child, they are able to understand their weaknesses and work towards improving them. In the same way, their strengths are more evident and the private tutor can work to strengthen them further.
Private tuition enables the home tutor to identify the areas in which the child is weakest and needs the most help. This way, the lessons can be dedicated to meet this particular need. This is something that is nearly impossible to achieve in group tuition because the teacher is handling different children and will not have enough time to attend to each child individually. Other problems that may be distracting the child from the lesson are brought to the fore in private tuition. Such distractions include lack of concentration, absenteeism and attention deficiency. In a group setting, the tutor will most likely not know who is mentally absent from the class or who is not concentrating.
Private tuition enables the student to achieve their optimal best in class work. If the child is a slow learner, the private tutor will know as soon as they begin coaching them. They will then develop a plan that will enable the child to learn and study at his pace. Because lessons will be customized in a way that is easy for him or her to understand, the child will be able to perform better and even record improved grades. Shy students too will be able to explore their potential because they are free and can engage fully in the subject.
Private tuition is fertile ground for developing the child in all other aspects, not just academically. The child learns to express themselves, articulate issues, organizational skills and gains self-confidence. He or she is able to understand him or herself better. They become more aware of their abilities and build confidence in what they can achieve.
A child's concentration improves. They are able to work independently and don't have to rely on other students to help them in their studies, whether in doing homework, revision or research. Their study skills improve too and they are able to go about their studies in the most efficient way.
Disadvantages of Private Tuition
Private tuition is a bit costly compared to group tuition. The parent has to pay premium rates because the tutor dedicates a lot of time to that one child, when he or she would be making more money coaching a group of students together.
The child's socialization is limited to the tutor only. The child may have trouble in developing some skills and qualities necessary for group assimilation. Qualities such as patience, tolerance and teamwork are easier to learn in a group situation.
